We’re currently in the middle of our first official trip away from home as a party of three. It’s been two days, and we’ve had mixed experiences as far as traveling with an infant goes. Mittens is a pretty awesome little traveller, but at only 6 months old, our journey has not been without minor issues. Let’s review some high and lows points thus far:
High: Sleeping in the car for the drive there.
We left at 10pm Wednesday for our 3 hour long drive. Mittens was dog-tired when I strapped her into the carseat, and after about ten minutes of snuggling with the plush Elmo toy that I’d stuffed next to her, she was out. For three hours.
Low: Disrupted diaper schedule on the first night.
Because of our late departure and her late bedtime, Mittens’ poop schedule was off. She hadn’t pooped by the time we hit our hotel at 1am, so I put her back to bed and crossed my fingers that the diaper explosion set to occur in the morning wouldn’t be too disastrous. I was wrong; it was enormous, and it got everywhere. Including the bedsheet. We left $20 for the housekeepers and got the heck outta there before anyone noticed.
High: Sleeping through the night, even away from home.
Mittens is A-OK with sleeping in the Pack-N-Play (thank God). As long as she’s got her fleece blanket, Elmo, and a pacifier, she’s set.
Bad: Nap time is completely off.
Apparently infants think sitting by the pool and whining about being tired is preferable to going back to the room and actually taking a nap. Infant logic continues to confound me. Also, is it a rule that housekeeping must be in the room every single time I come back to attempt naptime?
Good: Mittens is having a great time socializing with people.
Mittens loves interacting with other people, especially other babies and kids. No joke: she sat there in the pool splashing the water with her hands for twenty minutes while the other kids smiled at her and talked to her.
So have I just jinxed the rest of our trip karma by talking about all this? Maybe. Got two days to find out.
